Stress, cortisol og vægt: fakta vs. hype

What cortisol does

Cortisol is a hormone involved in the normal stress response, metabolism, blood pressure, and sleep-wake rhythm. Levels naturally change across the day. Stress can affect eating, sleep, activity, and weight, but a single symptom or body shape cannot diagnose a cortisol disorder.

True cortisol disorders require medical evaluation. Commercial tests and “detox” products marketed for vague cortisol problems may be misleading.

Reduce the load where possible

Stress management is not simply learning to tolerate unreasonable demands. Practical support—childcare, financial advice, workload changes, treatment for pain, or community connection—may matter more than a relaxation technique.

Brief tools can still help: slower breathing, time outdoors, movement, music, a regular meal, or contacting someone supportive. Choose something that fits the moment.

When symptoms need assessment

Seek care for persistent anxiety, low mood, major sleep disruption, or coping through substances. Sudden physical changes such as easy bruising, marked muscle weakness, or wide purple stretch marks also warrant medical discussion.

Be wary of anyone promising rapid weight loss by “resetting” hormones. Sustainable care addresses the full picture and uses properly validated tests when indicated.
