Begin with their priorities

Do not assume someone wants to lose weight or discuss their body. Ask, “Would you like support with this?” and listen to what support means to them. They may want company at an appointment, help with meals, a walking partner, or simply no advice.

Respect a no. Concern does not create permission to monitor food, weight, or activity.

Use language that protects dignity

Avoid jokes, warnings, before-and-after comparisons, and praise for weight loss that may be unintentional or unhealthy. Do not label foods or people as “good,” “bad,” or “cheating.”

Focus on shared wellbeing: enjoyable meals, accessible activities, adequate rest, and medical care. Challenge weight-based comments and make sure furniture, equipment, and plans are inclusive.

Know the limits of your role

You can encourage professional care without diagnosing or prescribing. Offer to help find a respectful clinician if asked.

If you notice severe restriction, binge eating, purging, fainting, or significant emotional distress, express concern without judgment and encourage prompt professional support. In an immediate crisis, use local emergency services.
